What does ‘to work on’ our voice mean? What must we work on, precisely?
Working depends on breathing, the posture of our body, on listening, on the exactitude of our tone and volume, and on our need for physical endurance.
But we must also understand music: study it, with its rythmic structure, its melody, its harmony and its differing styles.
We must understand the language we sing in: contrary to musicians, singers communicate a text which gives their music an objective meaning.
And lastly, singers must also know how to move: they are not fixed to the ground like a piano and their body is part of their expressive instrument.
Learning the technique for our voice includes all these demands.
But this is not all.
Even when the voice has been trained to become a convincing musical instrument it must have life breathed into it. This involves using our emotions, developping our capacity to become infused by them and transmitting them sincerely to the public: this quality is what the audience will remember.
Singing is an everlasting quest for perfection and emotion. |
